Lincoln Castle provides a great day out for the family having three towers to climb and great wall walks where you can see for miles on end.

This castle was one of the first castles the Normans built, constructed in 1068. The castle occupies what was the site of a former Roman fortress. According to the Domesday Book, 166 Saxon homes were cleared to make way for the castle.

The view from the castle is still very impressive. The castle walls are still intact, and it is possible to walk around most of the wall.

The castle is unusual in that it has two mottes.  It is only one of two such castles in the country, the other being at Lewes in Sussex.

The Lucy Tower, built in the 12th century, houses the graves of prisoners executed at Lincoln. One of the prisoners whose grave can be found here is that of William Frederick Harry, hanged 1 April 1872 for the murder of his wife. His grave is marked with his initials.

If that’s not gruesome enough for you then there’s the prison to explore! Imagine rattling chains and tiny dungeons!

They have a full events programme through the summer with activities for all ages and the annual jousting contest. Guided tours are free every day but you can scramble around yourself too if you prefer.
