Things to do in Northumberland, UK, Europe

  • Northumberland lies in North East England bordering Cumbria, County Durham and the North Sea. Its coastline with many golden, sandy beaches, is classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

This is a place filled with the magic of rolling hills, moorlands, magnificent views of pristine coastline and tiny towns with hidden gardens and medieval castles. This is a land carved by bloody wars where traffic is scarce and outdoor adventure awaits!

Walk the 103 kilometre long coastal path stopping off at the cosy pubs for a meal or drink, pass the towns and tiny coastal hamlets going back in time in the fishing villages. Visit Craster, where the kippers and herring come from or the 18th Century dam of Guyzance.

Smooth the stones of the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle in Alnwick and marvel at the Robert Stevenson designed railway viaduct spanning the River Tweed. Holy Island, and all the castles that look out over the ocean and countryside, and the fields where ancient battles were fought contrast with Northern Europe's largest manmade lake in Kielder Water and Forest Park.

The vast sandy beach at Bamburgh Castle is beautiful on a long Summer evening and other wonderful spots can be found at Beadnell, Embleton and Almouth.

Attractions to see in the area include:
