Frequently asked questions
What is Coast Radar?
Coast Radar is an information service that makes big use of maps to plot beaches, places of interest, activities, services, shops and accommodation. The maps are supplied by Google Maps technology. Coast Radar overlays the maps with markers that point to detailed information pages. Coast Radar is unique on the internet as it combines the following:
- Browse by category - pick a category from Beaches, Activities, Kit Bag and Services to find local information on the map.
- Where do you want to go? - use the quick jump located top right of all pages to search based on a location. This lists all categories local to your selected location.
- Draggable maps - Click and drag maps to adjust your map view.
- Satellite or map imagery - All maps can be adjusted to show a satellite or map view of your location that you can then zoom and adjust.
- Distance calculations - on the detailed pages all markers surrounding your chosen location have an "as the crow flies" distance calculation in miles and km.

Why can't I see the map?
To view the map you need the latest Javascript enabled browsers. We would recommend using Firefox as we have found it works faster than other browsers. On some occasions the maps are too slow due to a combination of browser, older computer and broadband connection. If this is the case we would recommend you don't use the search by map but use the search for a location on the header of each page. This jumps selectively to your chosen location and does not need to gather as much information and so is much faster.
