Today it is split, the east wing is the military headquarters and the west wing is the official residence of the Minister of the republic for Madeira and whilst part is occupied by the army you can visit the Fortress Museum that traces the history of the building.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Christopher Columbus married the first Porto Santo governors daughter, Filipa Moniz, and they lived in this house before moving to Funchal.
