New activity :: Palacio de Sao Lourenco and Fortress Museum, Funchal, PT

This palace is one of the most impressive buildings in Funchal. Today it is split, the east wing is the military headquarters and the west wing is the official residence of the Minister of the republic for Madeira and whilst part is occupied by the army you can visit the Fortress Museum that traces the history of the building.

Originally it was built in the 1520s by the first captains of Madeira whilst Spain occupied the island to help defend the island from attack.

Once the home of Chritopher Columbus this museum has been restored to include artifacts either connected to Christopher Columbus or related to the islands history. These include portraits, models of ships and maps.

Christopher Columbus married the first Porto Santo governors daughter, Filipa Moniz, and they lived in this house before moving to Funchal. Shortly after moving Filipa died giving birth to their son.

Madeira is a great location to go diving and most hotels can arrange trips. With water temperatures of 18 to 23�C, clear waters and a wide selection of species like barracudas, monkfish, and dolphins.

Housed on three floors in an 18th century former bishop's palace is an excellent collection of art collected from the churches of Madeira and private collections. Includes collection of Renaissance Flemish paintings which is thought to be one of the best in Portugal.

The building is of baroque period and lies on one side of the Praca do Municipio, the mosaic-paved main square.

The cathedral was built between 1485 and 1514. A typical southern European Gothic (Manueline style) structure of basalt-stone and narrow windows. The most striking feature inside is the geometric patterned cedar wood and ivory ceiling.
